Wow! If you
pray long enough and hard enough to the weather Gods, you will be rewarded.
That was the case for our last VMG fly-in to Lake Havasu on Saturday,
October 29th. It was a perfect day for flying. We had a tail wind
coming from Tucson (and even a tail wind going back).
Almost all of the members who registered flew in. Ed
Shreffler was the only “no show”. Seems they were all loaded up and found
out they had a dead battery. They found an overhead light switch that was
left on. Guess it has happened to all of us 201J owners at one time or
another.
We had been
to Lake Havasu several years ago and made it a RON staying right at the base
of the famous London Bridge. This time we were just going to stay at the
airport. We arrived just before 10 A.M. and three Mooneys were already there
just waiting for the rest of the group to show up. Executive Air again had
line boys waiting for us and we parked in a nice straight line for a photo
op when the remainder of the Mooneys arrived.
We were advised to make sure our group showed up early at
Waldo’s BBQ as they said they get really busy at noon. We had 14 planes show
up and in all, 35 people had lunch at Waldo’s. We even had one non-VMG
Mooney just flying around for a $100 hamburger join us. Interesting – only
two other tables were occupied while we had lunch.
Waldo’s is famous for their BBQ, and from what we could
see most of us had it. With the weather so beautiful no one was in a hurry
to leave.
his fly-in
was kind of a spur of the moment thing and the turnout was encouraging. We
asked for volunteers who could act as point men to host monthly fly-in and
did get several VMG members to offer.
Our thoughts at this time are to have casual day fly-ins
to convenient airports with food on the field or at least nearby that we can
get transportation to. Plans are being made now for the next few months
fly-ins and will be posted.
See you all next time.
