Our first fly in to Temple Bar, Lake Mead, Arizona found us in clear blue skies and 100 mile
visibility which was much appreciated by our California visitors.
The 3,500 foot uphill runway has a 120 foot altitude increase and we
found that all had a perfect “10” landing as it is almost impossible to bounce
landing uphill.
Airplanes began arriving at
9:30 AM
and kept arriving until 1PM.
A beautifully restored 1949 Mooney Mite piloted by Larry Minch of
Cottonwood,
AZ flew in first and we all
marveled at his shiny and well maintained airplane.
Larry’s friend, Jack Merritt, also flew in from
Cottonwood in a RV6 home built with bubble canopy and we were
delighted he could join us. Best of
all we got to see Bruce Smith and his wife from
Las Vegas, NV who had previously given us a little too
much excitement at the July Fly In at Big Bear, CA.
At noon we had our group photo taken and
then headed down to the resort for lunch.
After everyone introduced themselves, Paul Kortopates, gave a
presentation about the Baja, California Sur, Mexico fly in coming up in February
2008. We then headed down to the
marina where the boats are moored.
Les of the Temple Bar Resort staff gave the group a tour of two luxury
houseboats, a 50 footer and a 59 footer.
Doug Dulin of Lake Havasu City was caught
red handed at the helm attempting to take the group for a cruise around the
lake. Paul and Gena flew in from Montgomery Field, CA and
spent the night with their dog who could not wait to go swimming in Lake Mead.
